Abstract

Dams are constructed to impound water within a reservoir. This chapter, divided into four topics: embankment dams; concrete and masonry dams; flood and discharge provision; and dam regulation, supervision and inspection, gives guidance on the design, operation, maintenance and management of reservoirs and dam structures. The sections on dam types describe construction techniques and materials including arch and gravity dams, earth embankments, rockfill, roller-compacted concrete, concrete and masonry and give guidance on design requirements. The sections on flood and discharge describe the methodology for design flood estimating, flood routing and four types of spillway. The sections on regulation address managing dam safety, roles and responsibilities, environmental considerations, fish passes, inspection programmes, indicators of deterioration and failure events. The text discusses design requirements including stability, seismic loading, strength, and durability, pore pressure and instrumentation, sedimentation and watertightness.
