Abstract
This chapter addresses the methods for disinfecting drinking water. Sections describe the options including chlorine and chlorine-containing compounds, ozone and ultraviolet light, sodium hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide and the plant and methods for generating hypochlorite, ozone and ultraviolet on site. Sections explain the reactions of chlorine in drinking water, the use of chlorine in the presence of ammonia compounds and the use of chloramination for trihalomethane and taste and odour control, disinfection by-products and common methods for disinfecting plant and water mains after construction, maintenance or rehabilitation. The text explains the terms: chlorine residual, contact time, Ct value, breakpoint, superchlorination and reactor validation.
