Abstract

This chapter describes the design and function of service reservoirs and water towers; ground and elevated storage. The chapter discusses design considerations for both types of storage including: minimum storage capacity required, contingency reserve and managing network events. It covers design standards and type of construction including: water retaining concrete design, reinforced circular, prestressed and precast panel circular concrete and monolithic concrete construction as well as welded steel plate, segmental plate reservoirs and tanks. Sections provide guidance on the optimum shape and depth, key design parameters, internal baffle walls, inlet, outlet, overflow and drawdown arrangements, ventilation, access, drainage and waterproofing, covering and protecting the structure, joints and jointing, testing service reservoirs and tanks, cleaning and disinfecting, water quality and sampling and water testing, instrumentation, inspection and repairing and looking for leaks.
