Abstract

Room temperature cold spray technique uses the nano-sized/submicron ceramic particles as feedstock, deposits ceramic coatings onto substrates through gas flows at room temperature. In this chapter, the principle, processing parameter and bonding mechanism for the room temperature cold spray technique are summarized. Effects of the processing parameters, such as gas, pressure, powder structure, temperature, coating thickness, spray distance and heat treatment on particle deposition, coating formation and coating performance, are systemically described. Bonding mechanisms of both coating/substrate interface and particle interface are discussed in terms of the experimental characterization and numerical simulation. Microstructures for dense ceramic coatings are also described in respect to the coating thickness. The ultra-thin dense ceramic coatings are usually used for the solar cells, while the thick dense ceramic coatings are for Li-ion battery and solid oxy-fuel cells.
