Abstract

Vertebrates, both fish and tetrapods possess a postanal tail as a defining vertebrate character. How caudal vertebrae form a tail, whether there is a tail bud and a tail epithelial ridge and the developmental basis of tail loss are covered in this chapter. Tail and caudal fin regeneration in anuran tadpoles and zebrafish, respectively, meristic variation in vertebral number, and the role of Tbx genes in tail development also are discussed.
