Abstract

This chapter focuses on wastewater treatment systems. Safe disposal of wastewater using the most economical means is sound industrial waste management. The first step toward this objective is to characterize the wastewater for determining the best option for treatment, reuse, or ultimate disposal. The segregation of waste sources in wastewater includes removal of floating or settleable solids, removal of organic solids, removal of colloidal solids, removal of inorganic dissolved solids, equalization of flows and waste, neutralization of flows and waste streams, oxidation, chemical precipitation, sludge treatment, solid waste treatment, solid waste disposal, gaseous waste treatment, and segregation of waste sources. There are a wide range of physical and/or chemical processes that may be used for treating organic liquids such adsorption, oxidation–reduction, air stripping, and reverse osmosis. Inorganic solutions, such as metal solutions, can be treated by a number of operations such as chemical precipitation, electrodialysis, ion exchange, and electrolyte recovery.
