Abstract

This chapter covers the various different types of non-standard DNA structures that have been studied subsequent to the advent of the double helix concept. DNA mismatches and mis-pairings are discussed in detail and representative DNA duplexes containing these lesions are illustrated and discussed, emphasising the effect of these lesions on DNA conformation. DNA triplex helices, their structural features and the rules for strand recognition are outlined, together with the various approaches taken to extend the triplex helix concept to targeting general duplex sequences.
