Abstract

The fundamental components of DNA and RNA are introduced here: bases, deoxyribose and ribose pentose sugars and the phosphodiester backbone. Watson–Crick base pairing is detailed together with the accepted definition of base and base-pair morphology, together with the various descriptors of these features. Sugar pucker is described in detail together with the conformational features of the phosphodiester backbone and the allowed ranges of conformational angles that describe its conformation.
