Abstract

Within the context of future tourism and air transport flows, very little attention has been given to limits to growth, and so this chapter investigates this issue. It introduces key concepts from a demand viewpoint, referring to the scant literature concerning the air transport and tourism sectors, as well as surface travel. The main analysis is based on a UK case study, using a mixture of primary and secondary data, when the influence of time and income constraints is considered for both frequent and infrequent flyers. Evidence of demand maturity is also investigated for a few specific UK markets. It is concluded that standard models of demand for air travel or tourism do not adequately reflect factors contributing to market maturity and the nature of frequent and infrequent flyers, and hence there is a need to better understand such factors to improve the quality of future demand projections.
