Abstract

In the field of lignocellulosic conversion, pretreatment is recognized as an essential operation. To be able to be used in industry, conventional pretreatment processes have a few limitations that need to be overcome. Consequently, minimal or severe modification of the existing methods and the development of the advanced technologies have emerged as areas for research. This chapter discusses several sustainable and emerging pretreatment methods applied on a number of different biomass. Further, the reaction mechanisms involved with the technologies, such as microwave, ultrasound, deep eutectic solvents, and high force assisted pretreatment methods are explored to provide detail insights on such reactions. For the reader, this chapter provides an opportunity to gain robust knowledge on various advanced and emerging pretreatment methods for the selection of a universal technique for large scale output at lignocellulosic refineries.
