Abstract
This chapter gives an overview of the organization and function of molecular tumor boards (MTBs). The field of precision oncology is rapidly evolving, with tumor molecular profiling using next-generation sequencing techniques becoming increasingly common in the care of advanced cancer patients. This presents a challenge for clinicians who are expected to process and apply large amounts of emerging information–related genetic alterations and targeted therapies. Many institutions have implemented MTBs to support physicians in the adoption and implementation of precision oncology. This chapter explores the many functions of MTBs including assembling the right team of experts, selecting patients for analysis, choosing the most appropriate molecular diagnostic test, and generating clinical recommendations. Finally, we outline areas for continued growth and improvement of MTB programs.
