Abstract
The main target of agricultural water management strategy for arid and semiarid regions like Northeast Ethiopia should focus on enhancing the agricultural productivity by effectively using the available limited water resources. A field experiment was conducted for 2years to determine an appropriate irrigation regime for hot pepper, which increases the water productivity, using a CROPWAT computer program. Three levels of irrigation [125%, 100%, and 75% of crop water requirement (CWR)] and three levels of irrigation frequency (5, 7, and 9-day interval) were taken as a treatment using a split plot design. The result showed that 75% application depth in 5days interval and 100% application depths in 7days interval showed the highest significant increment on yield, yield related data, and water use efficiency as compared to farmers’ irrigation practice in the two experimental sites with minimal variations on evapotranspiration demand and soil textural class. The two irrigation scheduling applications had also shown a paramount advantage in increasing the total irrigable area by saving a considerable amount of water. These irrigation schedules can therefore be recommended in the study areas and other similar arid areas for enhancing agricultural productivity using the limited available water resources.
