Abstract

Children with epilepsy have significant impairments in Theory of Mind (ToM) and associated social problems, yet evidence-based interventions to treat these difficulties do not exist. The aim of this case study was to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of a novel cognitive-behavioral intervention designed to improve ToM and social competence in children with epilepsy (trial registration ACTRN12618000974202). Two children with temporal lobe epilepsy (9 and 11years old) participated together in 4 weekly, face-to-face intervention sessions (1.5–2h each). Parents and children completed measures assessing ToM, social competence, treatment acceptability, and barriers/facilitators to attendance. Results showed that the intervention was feasible, acceptable, and safe. Improvements were observed in children’s ToM and social competence. Findings justify evaluation of the intervention in a phase II feasibility trial and provide practical insights that may assist with development of future interventions that target ToM and/or social skills.
