Abstract

Perinatal depression presents particular challenges for successful intervention using a cognitive behavioral approach to treatment. We review cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions for antenatal and postnatal depression and describe our tailored approaches. CBT has a robust evidence base for use in these contexts. Our face-to-face CBT (FTF-CBT) programs have proven efficacious in several randomized trials and we describe their adaptation as the basis for a suite of online treatment programs. Both types of delivery are effective at reducing both depressive and anxiety symptoms in clinically depressed perinatal women. The online MumMoodBooster programs perform at least as well as our specialized FTF-CBT approach and these results are replicated in real-world service implementation. Future applications of the CBT treatment approach in perinatal mental health could be expanded to include the treatment of fathers, partners and the mother-infant relationship.
