Abstract

This chapter deals with treatment and therapy of the aged. Dementia and Alzheimer's disease are discussed also. The chapter includes forms, templates, information sheets, guidelines, and other tools to help the therapist address the problems of this ever-increasing segment of our population. Templates for symptoms and diagnostic impressions for medication use with elderly patients, geriatric depression scale (short form), the geriatric hypochondriasis scale, geriatric depression scale (long form) and adult brain system checklist are given. The gravely disabled individuals are given an insight on, and the process to take care of such people is given. Principles, tips, and guidelines for successful aging are elaborated. Tips for retiring seniors are also listed. Guidelines for healthy and effective family visitation are also explored. List of tests (formal and informal) for Dementia and Alzheimer's are given in addition to signs, treatment, precautions and management for the same. The subject of caregivers and care giving is explored discussing its advantages, benefits, ways to make it a rewarding experience and advice to do it well. Elder abuse and a therapists guide to handling it are also discussed.
