Abstract

Biogas production is a well-established process for energy generation, nutrient recovery, and valorization of organic residues. Typically, the biogas is composed of methane, carbon dioxide, and other impurities. The removal or transformation of carbon dioxide (biogas upgrading) and the purification from other contaminants (biogas cleaning) are essential for increasing the calorific value of biogas. Therefore, the new trends in exploiting biogas as an alternative to natural gas, the recent renewable energy demands and the interest in placing biogas sector as a keystone in circular bio-based economy societies paved the way for establishing new technologies for upgrading the biogas quality. This chapter aims at presenting different methodologies and advances for biogas upgrading. Technologies that are already marketable and novel concepts that are currently under development are reported.
