Abstract

Scientific advancement is dependent on the creation and dissemination of accurate and reproducible research. Bias is any trend or systemic error that decreases objectivity and knowingly or unknowingly directs a study toward false conclusions. Bias can be present at any research study stage, from the initial study design to the final publication. Several forms of bias exist, including but not limited to selection bias, operator bias, publication bias, and crossover bias. Therefore, awareness of different forms of bias and efforts toward conscious mitigation via appropriate study design, investigation, and analysis is essential for achieving greater accuracy and validity to best guide clinical decision making.
