Abstract

Procedure technique development is important as it helps in successful translation of a concept to the bedside as a clinical procedure. The chapter presents the planning research and experimental procedures carried out on animals, using various methodologies, and documenting the different stages of procedural technique development. Initial treatment using a new innovative procedure can be successful for a disease state wherein, after primary clinical indication for a procedure has been established, physicians and scientists can assess the safety and feasibility of a procedure, generally using animal experiments. Later trials carried out in human patients would require supporting data from preclinical studies. First, the novelty of the concept should be determined, then methodologies outlined, starting with live animal models (both in vivo and in vitro). The stages of procedures documented include innovation, development, exploration, assessment, and long-term results.
