Abstract
The development of wind energy systems has been taking huge interest from researchers aiming to increase the penetration of wind energy and improve the performance of its related systems. This chapter aims to highlight the most crucial developments of wind energy systems. The evolution of wind turbine size, noise reduction techniques, and vibration control systems are presented. Large-scale and small-scale wind turbines are both taking interest nowadays since each scale is preferred from different point of view depending on the type of application. The growth of large-scale wind turbines aims to increase the efficiency and penetration of wind energy. However, small-scale wind turbines are favorable for individual buildings and decentralized utilizations since they have low capital cost and less impact on people compared to that of large scale. Recently, flexible blades were introduced to cope with wind condition fluctuations and increase the working range of wind turbines.
