Abstract

Indian globe thistle (Echinops echinatus Roxb) is a medicinal plant with several medicinal properties. This plant is commonly used in Pakistan and India for treatment of many diseases. Indian globe thistle is a medicinal weed that is also used as an herb traditionally. It has been utilized throughout the world as food and a traditional medicine. Different alkaloids, flavonoids, lipids, terpenoids, and steroids are present in this weed. It is used for sperm antimotility in different regions of the world. It also has been used as an antidiabetic, antiinflammatory, analgesic, hepatoprotective, diuretic, and for antiulcer activity. Additional extensive studies are needed to establish the safety and efficacy of this plant to support its use in human healthcare.
