Abstract

Compared with their conventional counterparts, unconventional reservoirs have higher heterogeneity, smaller pores, and narrower throats. Their matrixes are chiefly nanoscale pore–throat systems with millimeter to micrometer pores developed locally. Different microscopic scales of pore-throats have diverse, complex structures and poor connectivity. The following chapter is an introduction to fine-grained sediments, the types of unconventional reservoirs, nanoscale pore–throat systems, the evolution of nanoscale pore–throats in mud shale, and the evaluation of tight sandstone reservoirs.
