Abstract
This chapter describes how transportation and energy use are correlated, suggest a way of improving transportation management under a perspective of energy efficiency, and highlight the potential impact it may bring to the environment and to society. It addresses the potential impact on the environment due to the use of fossil fuels. It showed that there are strategies to reduce energy use in transportation through the adequate planning of this activity. It also made evident that it is possible to achieve energy efficiency gains in road transportation, the most widely used mode of transportation in the world, by means of technological advances or adequate operation management when providing this service. Worldwide used ASI and ASIF methodologies are considered and aligned with the main concept of transportation energy use planning. As tools for energy efficiency management in transportation an entire program was designed for road transportation. The concept of life cycle assessment (LCA) was also introduced and an example of how to use it is presented.
