Abstract

Xenobiotics are substances that are not produced naturally and are present in higher concentrations than are usual. Xenobiotic compounds are a serious issue and are difficult to degrade. The physicochemical methods for removing xenobiotics are not very effective as they are time-consuming, noneco-friendly, produce harmful and toxic products, and costly. Biological methods for the degradation of xenobiotic compounds are simple, cheap, and effective. This chapter discusses the role of plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria in the degradation of xenobiotic compounds. The chapter discusses the sources and examples of xenobiotic compounds and mechanisms and microbial enzymes and degradation pathways involved in the degradation of xenobiotic compounds. The use of plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria for the degradation of xenobiotic compounds will help to achieve in the sustainable environment clean-up of xenobiotic compounds.
