Abstract
This chapter is concerned with the mechanics of laminates and includes a conventional description of the laminate stiffness matrix, coupling effects in typical laminates, and procedures for stress calculations for in-plane and interlaminar stresses. The topic of this chapter is to provide equations capable of predicting the behavior of a laminate as a system of layers with given properties. The only restriction that is imposed on the laminate as an element of a composite structure concerns its total thickness, which is assumed to be much smaller than the other dimensions of the structure.
