Abstract

In the postgenomic era, biological studies are characterized by the rapid development and wide application of systems biology, which is often based on global analyses of biological samples using high-throughput analytical approaches and bioinformatics and may provide new insights into biological phenomena. In this chapter, the development and advances of systems biology made over the past decades are reviewed, especially genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. The applications of systems biology are then summarized in regard to their use in studying the action mechanisms of TCM formulae, TCM syndrome, TCM formulae component interactions and compatibility, and TCM formulae pharmacokinetics as well as in TCM-based drug discovery and development.
