Abstract

This chapter discusses abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) in women. Although the chapter incorporates much of what we know, it also highlights many areas in which there is not sufficient evidence to make reliable conclusions on how to treat this pathology in women. It starts by introducing the general differences in disease progression and outcomes between men and women. It then goes on to discuss the epidemiology, screening, and surveillance of AAAs because they pertain to women. Finally, the indications for operative repair and outcomes of surgery are thoroughly described because they pertain to both elective and emergent cases of AAA in women. Ultimately, this chapter brings to light the notion that women should not necessarily be treated for AAAs solely based on what we know to be true in men. Further research is necessary to treat women with AAAs appropriately.
