Abstract

The developments in the area of power electronics offer new opportunities in the operation of hydropower generating units. The applied load in pump and turbine operation cannot be changed easily. By using an intelligent frequency converter, the speed of the units can be changed in a defined range without losing much efficiency. An additional benefit of this concept is the improved transient performance of the entire system by considering triplets as membership function. In this chapter, the advantage of the speed variable power generating system equipped with frequency converters is shown using fuzzy logic controller (FLC). Here, a comparative analysis between typical fuzzy inference system and fractional fuzzy inference system is performed.
