Abstract
Smart textiles have recently gained global attention due to their potential to solve societal challenges through novel innovations. Together with conventional properties, smart textiles are manufactured with additional functions to offer a broader range of applications in various fields, including military, healthcare, protection, sports and fitness. However, the innovative interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches used to develop smart textile products have stirred new challenges in their maintenance and disposal after use. These present environmental issues as well as health and waste management risks. Nonetheless, the environmental, health and waste management aspects of smart textile products are barely documented. Furthermore, maintenance procedures and disposal of end-of-life smart textile products are also slightly reported. This chapter presents an overview of smart textile products, their environmental aspects, health issues and waste management processes. Recent trends in clean and green processes of smart textile products and strategies to improve the impacts are also discussed.
