Abstract

Emergency preparedness is an essential component of healthcare organizational preparedness, against both intentional acts of terror and naturally occurring crises that have the potential to cause serious harm to large portions of the population. Incorporating an all-hazards approach to preparedness, beginning with an annual hazard vulnerability analysis (HVA); this chapter focuses on how the security practitioner can lead or support successful emergency management planning efforts within the healthcare organization. Weighing the effects of how an organization should mitigate risks, plan preparedness activities, respond to events and detail recovery procedures and efforts, this chapter focuses on many security-related events within the healthcare setting such as infant abduction, active shooter, hostage situation, restricted access /lockdown, VIP situations, civil disturbance, bomb threat, and terrorism in addition to the implications to the organization and security operations associated with evacuation, patient decontamination, mass casualty and patient surge events.
