Abstract

The chapter discusses computations with the complex numbers. The chapter presents the relations that represent the sum, difference, product, and quotient for any complex numbers a + bi and c + di. As these relations may be used as formulas for performing the four fundamental operations of arithmetic with any given complex numbers, this completely solves the problem of all such arithmetical computations. If the complex numbers a + bi and c + di are represented by points P and Q with the respective coordinates (a, b) and (c, d), then the sum (a + bi) + (c + di), which is equal to (a + c) + (b + d)i, would be represented by the point S with coordinates (a + c, b + d).
