Abstract

Urine culture is a widely used test that indicates the quantity and identity of any bacteria living in the urine at the time of collection. Misinterpretation of urine cultures contributes to overuse of antibiotics and consequent morbidity. What follows is a guide to understanding the role and limitations of the urine culture, as well as practical pearls on how to most skillfully use some common medications associated with urinary tract infections.
