Abstract

Corporate performance indicators for social performance and environmental performance are needed for a good management practice. These are needed if a corporation strives to manage the triple bottom line. The challenge is how to measure and track such intangibles as social performance and sustainability in a manner that reduces shareholder risk while enabling business managers to analyze environmental investments and risks within a financial framework consistent with that used for other business decision-making processes. Aside from the clear value to shareholders, such also could engender broad incentives for companies to view their operations through a sustainability lens. Companies produce environmental and sustainability reports that can serve the needs of both internal and external audiences. Corporations are increasingly issuing reports of their social and environmental performance.
