Abstract
Bio-based products are produced enzymatically or by microbial fermentation of plants and other renewable agricultural, marine, and forestry materials which provide an alternative to conventional products that include physiologically active fine chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, dietary supplements as well as food, feed, nutrient additives, etc. While microbial production of various chemicals has been successfully conducted and marketed, however, many chemicals and materials still await their efficient bio-based production. In addition, the industry increasingly recognizes the development of various chemicals from renewable resources as being attractive for investment. Hence, in this chapter, we address recent developments in the development of high-performance microbial cell factories for bio-based chemicals production.
