Abstract

In this chapter we address several topics that are significant to the future effectiveness of organizations. The purpose is not to provide answers to some very important questions, but to stimulate thinking in these areas and begin a search for solutions that will be applicable in the near term and possibly directions for the long term. First, the world of the future-from a corporate viewpoint, or looking at the market, environment, or landscape-is a system of systems that possesses all of the attributes of the age of complexity. Accelerating change, nonlinearity, increasing uncertainty, and growing complexity are apt descriptors that fit many parts of the world we work and live in. Organizations that survive in such a world will clearly become some form of a complex adaptive system.
