Abstract

Rapid growth in energy demands and environmental concerns associated with the use of fossil fuels has driven the growth of bioethanol industry, a promising renewable and environmental-friendly transportation fuel. Corn is the major feedstock for bioethanol production in the United States. This chapter discusses the status of bioethanol production, corn composition, and details of corn to ethanol conversion technologies. Key technical challenges and opportunities associated with new technologies and approaches are presented. The potential and challenges of the cellulosic bioethanol production are also reviewed.
