Abstract

Nutritional and health benefits of citrus fruits are well known for centuries and in many tribes of Northeast India, citrus fruits like lemons, pummelos, and oranges are used for treatments of various disorders. The citron (Citrus medica) is a fruit with certain medicinal values and has been known to man since ancient times. The consumption of C. medica, Citrus jambhiri, and Citrus limon has been emphasized in general for nutritive value in India for a long time. Besides fruits of the genus Citrus, the fruit of the genus Aegle of Rutaceae family, Bael (Aegle marmelos), is also known to possess medicinal values, and people consume it in India for therapeutic purposes. It is covered in this chapter because it is a close relative of citrus, and its tree, fruit, and leaf characteristics are similar to those of citrus. Citrus fruits provide adequate nutrition with respect to vitamin C; however their role in providing other nutrients and factors of medicinal value cannot be underestimated. Nutrients from a fresh source are immediately available to the body, although in small amounts. Even a small amount of vitamins can prevent the appearance of sub-clinical signs of deficiencies.
