Abstract

We are living an unparalleled increase in the prevalence of chronic metabolic diseases, including obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The pathogenesis of T2D includes both genetic and environmental factors, such as excessive caloric intake and physical inactivity. Recently, it has been described that environmental factors experienced by past generations may play a major role in predisposing for T2D in the future generations. It has been proposed that inheritance of environmentally acquired phenotypes might be mediated by nongenomic mechanisms, namely epigenetic mechanisms.
