Abstract

This chapter reviews the contributions of applied behavior analysis (ABA) to sports performance among youth, college, and professional athletes. Several aspects of ABA-sports intervention are covered, including behavioral assessment, motivation enhancement, skill acquisition, performance enhancement, and common procedures such as positive reinforcement, feedback, goal setting, and stimulus control. We present and describe research findings among athletes competing in football, soccer, swimming, tennis, basketball, baseball, track and field, and gymnastics. The chapter concludes with a discussion of several salient topics, notably assessment-derived intervention, behavioral coaching, intervention integrity, social validity, and translational research.
