Abstract

This chapter analyzes the role played by the security personnel monitoring the video cameras at the security console location and at other fixed or mobile remote locations. Ultimately, the security operator's ability to act as an alert, motivated observer determines the effectiveness of the video system. To ensure success, the management and the security director should analyze the security guard's duties and the security monitoring hardware. Video surveillance console design requires careful consideration from the human engineering aspect as well as hardware capability. The number and placement of monitors with respect to the guard(s) must be analyzed carefully in the early stages of design. A list of guard functions and duties should be generated and reviewed with the management and the security personnel at the facility, and critiqued by a professional consultant. The best system will be ineffective if proper attention is not paid to the human engineering aspects of the console room design.
