Abstract
Cation diffusion facilitator (CDF) belongs to the family of intermembrane transporters that plays a significant role in the homeostasis of divalent metal cations. CDF proteins are phylogenetically ubiquitous and are found in a wide range of host cell membranes across the kingdom. Owing to the efflux and transport of metal cations, CDFs are potentially helpful in the formulation of hyperaccumulating phytoremediation processes. Interestingly, functional evidences indicated that CDFs are not limited to the roles of metal homeostasis, as few members also play the role as a determining factor for metal resistance and others that facilitate cations donation for the transduction of signals. A few studies also supported their role in plant developmental processes under abiotic stresses. Thus the present chapter provides an overview of the CDF family transporters and their diverse roles in plants.
