Abstract

Increase in energy demand led scientists to do intensive research on methods to produce sustainable energy, and among such approaches, energy production by biofuel cells has proven to be an efficient one. This chapter includes history, classification, application, modification, and future perspective of biofuel cells. Durability of biofuel is dependent upon the factors, including material used in surfaces of biofuel cells, type of biocatalyst, and electron transferring process, which have been described in this chapter. Characteristics of electrodes, electrochemical reactions, and commercial applications of biofuel cells are also discussed. Despite numerous applications of biofuel cells, many other biological and mechanical challenges are also highlighted.
