Abstract

This chapter deals with the setting asterisk. Setting up Asterisk is a tedious process. Servers need to be designed to handle the expected call load. Installing Asterisk can be done in many ways. Live CDs are the easiest way to try Asterisk; just boot a CD and the system is running Asterisk. Installation CDs allow to install Asterisk onto a clean system and set up a working system. Compiling Asterisk permits one to have maximum flexibility as to how Asterisk is set up and installed. Binaries can allow setting up a system quickly and easily, but that system may be a few versions behind. Starting and using Asterisk is mostly done through the command-line interface. The CLI also allows starting and stopping Asterisk, along with reloading the configurations. Different options on the shutdown and restart commands let you control exactly when and how the system will shut down or restart.
