Abstract

The development of remote sensing and remote measurement technology has received increasing attention owing to its wide area monitoring ability. Infrared detection technology can detect the heating defects of various items of equipment on transmission lines. Infrared detecting instruments, basic methods for infrared-thermal detection and diagnosis and the application of infrared detecting systems are introduced in this chapter. UV detecting is another noncontact detection technology for detecting the external insulation status of high voltage lines. The UV detection system and the key associated technology are also introduced. As well as this, some examples of UV detection for transmission lines are described. With the use of a high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image, transmission lines can be monitored widely 24h a day and in all weather conditions. It can substantially improve power grid disaster prevention and increase the mitigation capability, and satisfy the security needs of a strong smart power grid. In this chapter, a project studying the extraction and analysis method of identifying the precise structure of transmission towers and conductors and the monitoring and assessment method of addressing transmission line damage is presented, while some wide area monitoring prospects for transmission lines, based on satellite remote sensing technology, are also discussed.
