Abstract

This chapter discusses the logic behind protecting industrial facilities with firewater systems. A firewater pump is not an absolute necessity for all industrial facilities as there are other mechanisms such as process emergency control measures, incident fuel consumption, and passive systems that can provide adequate sources of firewater flow that make the provision of a firewater pump irrelevant. The need for installing firewater pumps should be firmly established on the basis of the fire protection or risk philosophy established for the facility by senior or executive management during its design. Companies should also have their own internal management policies and engineering standards or guidelines for the design and construction of their facilities. These guidelines may be extensive or simple, based on the facility requirements.
