Abstract

Proper instructions should be provided to start-up firewater pump manually in an emergency so that even unfamiliar personnel can start it. The instructions should be in the language that is dictated for use at the facility. Pumps that can be started automatically or remotely should be provided with a warning sign stating the possibility of unattended driver and pump startup. Pump rooms or pump houses should be labeled on the outside so that they can be identified at a distance. This aids in emergency response actions. The pump driver controls should be easily accessible from at least two directions. This reduces the possibility that access to the unit will be blocked in an emergency, should manual startup or shutdown be required. Protective guards should be provided to prevent accidental contact with rotating equipment such as shafts, gear housings, and couplings, and for hot surfaces by operators and individuals. Suitable hazard warning signs should also be provided at locations, where individuals may be subject to injury. Emergency and ‘‘prefire’’ plans should be prepared for an installation that intends to provide firewater protection for its facilities or processes. Facility personnel should be trained on every item of equipment that is available or requires their operational support. Quality control (QC) measures must also be provided throughout the design, manufacturing, testing, shipment, installation, and commissioning of the unit to ensure an effective firewater pumping system is provided for a facility.
