Abstract

This chapter discusses the importance of testing of firewater pumps so that adequate flow performance and acceptable mechanical operation of a firewater pump will be available during an emergency. Firewater pumps are capable of producing high water pressures and capacities that can inflict fatal injuries and extensive property damage if not properly controlled and managed. The startup and commissioning of a firewater pump for service should be included as part of the prestartup safety review (PSSR) checklist for a new facility. All personnel involved in firewater pump tests should be briefed on the associated hazards, and the operational testing area should be restricted to the personnel solely involved in the testing. A procedure should be followed to identify the steps to be taken, readings to be recorded, and safety precautions to be observed while testing pumps. The procedure should also be reviewed and approved by the engineer in charge of the test operation.
