Abstract

Phytomicrobiome in the rhizosphere environment produces microbial volatile compounds, which have multitude of functions ranging from stimulating plant defense mechanism and promoting plant growth and development. The microbial volatiles modulate phytohormones and thus play a key role in plant growth, stress tolerance, and plant productivity. Here, we have described the microbial (bacterial) volatile compounds with diverse functionalities including plant growth promotion and plant defense. It is expected that in future, novel technological outcomes may emanate from the microbial volatiles for sustainable agricultural development.
