Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology including smart textiles/clothing has significantly altered current lifestyle. The 21st century is considered a smart age. The outcome of innovations in the field of smart textiles can sense, analyse, and respond in an intelligent way, i.e. responses can be electrical, thermal, or mechanical. Sensors, data processors, and actuators are major functions of smart textiles which must be compatible with clothing characteristics like comfort, durability, and resistance to regular textile maintenance processes and in the fashion world. Here we are confined to smart clothing, its characteristics, fabric structures, and designs. A piece of cloth has a specific structure based on single and compound weaves. Other forms of ornamentation by chemical processing and the use of various yarns having different functions are also discussed here. Thus, depending on the use of smart clothing for the new generation, we have to be selective in fabric structure and design.
