Abstract
Sorghum is one of the important staples in the semiarid tropics and ensures food and nutritional security for the poor people in that region. The crop is equally important for feed and forage for the animals and birds. It is infected by many diseases, which should be managed in an economical way for maintaining productivity and quality. Host-plant resistance for management of disease has the most economical and safe method of disease management in crops including sorghum. To achieve this, apart from host-plant resistance, knowledge of sorghum diseases, their biology, and epidemiology is a prerequisite. Many new developments have happened during last the two decades in the field of disease resistance. This chapter provides up to date information about major sorghum diseases and their management with emphasis on host-plant resistance. Screening and identification of new sources of resistance, mechanisms of disease resistance, genetics and inheritance of resistance, and utilization of resistance through conventional and molecular methods including transgenic are discussed in detail.
