Abstract
Novel and interesting findings from nature have inspired us to design and fabricate environmentally friendly antifouling coatings. Among the antifouling strategies observed in nature, natural surfaces with topographies are attractive because of their high antifouling efficiency and nontoxic mechanical antifouling mechanism. This chapter first introduces the development and limitations of traditional antifouling coatings. Bioinspired antifouling coatings with topographies from microscale and nanoscale to macroscale are highlighted. Different plants and animals with different topographies and antifouling mechanisms are introduced. The chapter also covers the fabrication process and challenges of artificial antifouling coatings. We hope that this chapter will help readers to understand the development of bioinspired antifouling coatings with topographies.
